On 10th May 2025, the synagogue hosted a special Sabbath morning service in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The service was officiated by Rabbi Ariel Abel, who is Chaplain to HM Forces.
We were delighted to welcome as special guests Dr Crispin Pailing, representing the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, the Worshipful the Mayor of Sefton, Cllr June Burns and Mr Patrick Hurley, MP for Southport.
In a note of thanks to our guests, our Chair, Gillian Moonman, wrote:
“The Honorary Officers of Southport Hebrew Congregation join me in sending our grateful thanks to you for attending the Sabbath service.
The VE commemorations in Southport honoured those who fought for the freedoms which we are fortunate to benefit from today. We will always remember those who paid the ultimate price in those dark days of war in Europe.
Going forward, we trust that the goodwill felt throughout the United Kingdom is something to be nurtured and grown as we face the challenges of an ever-uncertain world.”
